CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The Chicago Police Department has released its latest numbers on violent crime in Chicago, and the data suggests local police are making some headway in addressing gun violence.

One year after the murder of Chicago Police Officer Aréanah Preston, the Chicago Police Department is honoring her sacrifice and said it has increased the police presence across the city and on the lakefront to maintain public safety.

The department also released statistics showing some progress: Fifty-five murders were reported in May 2024, which is 20% fewer than in May 2023. In 2021 and 2022, Chicago saw murder rates that were nearly as high as 2023.

Shootings were down 13% from 2023, and police said carjackings are down, too. Since the start of 2024, the city has recorded 401 vehicular hijackings — down nearly 15% compared to the same period in 2023.

CPD numbers show officers have made 737 motor vehicle-related arrests through the first five months of the year. Of the 98 people who have been arrested for vehicular hijacking, 41% have been juveniles.

Chicago crime statistics can be seen in their entirety on CPD's website.
