DeKalb City Council approves citizens police review board

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The city council in DeKalb has approved a citizens review board to consider police misconduct cases.

This was a year in the making and one of the aldermen, Scott McAdams, said some probably did not think it would happen.

"So, I wanted to say, if you'd ask most people after the murder of George Floyd, if we thought we could ever get to this point where we were ready to pass a citizen's review board on second reading, most would have agreed that it's unlikely and it takes all of us to bring about big changes. So I want to acknowledge the contributions of the Black Lives Matter movement," McAdams said.

The vote was unanimous.

"It takes a lot of time, a lot of energy went into this. So it's nice that we have this on the books and like I said, I'll be bringing members before you for approval on next council meeting," Mayor Cohen Barnes said.

The board's actions will be kept private until 30 days after a recommendation is made.
