(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — DeKalb County Sheriff's Deputies shot a man to death Wednesday morning after a standoff involving a hostage, the sheriff’s office said.
It was about 11 p.m. on Tuesday night when Rockford police notified other agencies to be on the lookout for a car that had been involved in a shooting.
The car is registered to an address in DeKalb, and police said it was heading in that direction. It was picked up by traffic cameras and pulled up to the address in Dekalb — as did sheriff’s deputies.
There was a pursuit, but authorities deployed stop sticks and disabled the car, after which there was an hourslong standoff.
Police said the man was armed, and he had a hostage.
After some negotiating, the hostage was freed. There were more negotiations, with deputies trying to convince the man to surrender. According to a statement from the sheriff’s office, though, the man instead pointed the gun at deputies and fired multiple times. Deputies returned fire and fatally struck the man.
Officials said the Illinois State Police and the DeKalb County State’s Attorney’s Office have been contacted to investigate the shooting.
