(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — There’s going to be a free lunch at Manny’s Delicatessen, after all.

The restaurant recently launched a challenge to customers, some of whom have not been wearing their masks or face coverings properly to avoid the spread of coronavirus.

If they could wear them properly for 30 days without reminders from staff, the owner of Manny’s promised to hand out free sandwiches.

No dice.

“How many days did they go?” WBBM Newsradio’s Mike Krasuer asked Wednesday.

“It didn’t last more than a day. Every day we tried to restart (the contest), multiple days in a row, and every day there was a handfuls of people who didn’t follow the rules,” owner Dan Raskin said.

He knew that would happen, he says. He extended the offer a couple of times and then finally said on social media the challenge failed.

He also asked if someone would be willing to sponsor a free-sandwich day for people who came in with a mask. He got a taker, an anonymous regular.

The giveaway — up to 1,000 sandwiches, one per customer — begins 9:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Manny’s, 1141 S. Jefferson St., is known for its towering corned-beef sandwiches.
