Food delivery driver shot and killed in Englewood: Police

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A food delivery driver was shot and killed in Englewood last night.

It’s the latest in a string of recent attacks on gig workers.

The 53-year-old man was driving near 57th and Sangamon around the dinner hour,at about 6:30 p.m., when Chicago police said he was shot multiple times in the chest.

After he crashed into a parked car, the driver was taken to the hospital where he died.

No one is in custody.

The group the Chicago Gig Alliance plans to hold a vigil at City Hall Thursday morning to call for greater protections for Uber and Lyft drivers, saying those who earn a living driving are afraid for their lives.

Police have warned delivery drivers about three robberies on the Near West Side last week. Last month a Lyft driver was shot and killed in Austin.
