CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Winter weather is upon us and that means heating and cooling companies are having their busiest time of year.

Luke Weiden, general manager of the more than 100-year-old Deljo Heating and Cooling in Chicago, said homeowners should prepare before the temperatures drop.

“You always want to make sure you get ahead of these problems, and if you have an older furnace that creates more issues too, so looking at the lifespan of your furnace is important,” Weiden said.

Most furnaces last between 15 and 30 years.

“Most people kick that repair down the road…Then, the cold temperatures kick in, and their furnace is working overtime and they either neglect maintenance or neglect any repairs, and they wait too long,” said Weiden.

Weiden said when your furnace is working ok let it do the work.

“We always advise when we have these bitterly cold temperatures that you keep it on hold at the same temperature so it doesn’t have to work so hard to recover,” Weiden said.

With the recent blast of winter weather, Weiden told WBBM on Monday their phones were ringing off the hooks.

HomeAdvisor reported the average cost of a new furnace in the U.S. is about $4,700.
