(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – In the Loop, sidewalk canopies up and it’s not for outdoor dining. Demolition of the Thompson Center is now in full swing.

For a few days now, excavators have been lifting mangled piles of the Thompson Center’s exterior panels into large dumpsters placed on the property. Portions of the monument with standing beast sculpture, which had laid scattered, have now been removed to make room for this work.

This nearly $300 million renovation will place around 2,000 Google employees in the Loop once finished

The sidewalk on Clark Street between Lake and Randolph streets on the east side of the building has been closed to foot traffic for a couple of weeks now.

There are pedestrian pathways with full protective canopies on all other sides. The full length of these canopies top to bottom are decorated in murals by Chicago artists.

The CTA train hub on Lake Street remains fully operational.
