BIG ROCK, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Plans for a slaughterhouse in a far western suburb have been dropped, and opponents of it are pleased, but still skeptical.
Big Rock Village President Dean Hummell said a developer has scratched controversial plans to build a slaughterhouse as part of a development that would include a grocery store, a butcher shop, and a truck repair company.
Danyell Dagostino of Concerned Citizens of Big Rock said that, "As far as environmentally, we couldn’t be happier that they have done an about face. This will preserve the quality of life, for the most part, that we enjoy here. We won’t have those noxious smells. The water table will be preserved."
Dagostino said, though, her group wants assurances a slaughterhouse will not be part of any future plans. That's why she said, "We’re very pleased with the direction things are going. This is definitely a huge step in the right direction, however, this isn’t over and we’re planning to follow this through to the completion."
Village President Hummell expects developers to spell out more of their plans in the next couple of weeks.
Big Rock is about 15 miles west of Aurora.
