CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office said Dexter Reed was shot 13 times by police officers with wounds to his chest, shoulder, back, legs and buttocks.
The office also reported that a toxicology report found the drug THC — the key psychoactive component found in marijuana — was in Reed’s system at the time of his death.
Andrew M. Stroth, an attorney for Reed’s family, has filed a civil rights lawsuit against the city and the police officers involved in the shooting.
“The autopsy report reinforces our contention that this was an unjustified use of force against Dexter Reed,” Stroth said. “Thirteen shots struck Mr. Reed, and he didn’t have a chance.”
Earlier this month, the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) released video footage of the shooting and reported that Reed initially shot one of the officers who approached his GMC Terrain.
On March 21, he was stopped on the West Side by plainclothes tactical officers for a purported seat belt violation and failed to comply with orders to roll down his windows and open his door.
COPA said the officers fired 96 shots in 41 seconds.
