(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Students and resident advisers at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign are manning the Dial-A-Carol line as they have since 1960.
Here’s how it works: Dial the number (217-332-1882) and request a song 24 hours a day. The singers will oblige.
“They do it in groups. People tend to not want to sing alone, particularly at night,” says UIllinois alum Chibu Asonye, who works as a residence hall director where the singers gather. “So, once we get to 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. there’s 30, 40 sometimes – students.”
The Dial-A-Carol repertoire is about 150 songs. Asonye says they’re hoping to sing to more than 8,000 people.
The line is open through Dec. 13.
