LISLE, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Joe Broda is a lifelong public servant.

He served as a trustee in Lisle for 15 years before becoming mayor and serving another 16 years.

Even in retirement, he spends his time giving back to his community through the Volunteers 4 Lisle program.

"I keep myself active by doing these things and in return it's self rewarding," Broda said.

Last week he received the Silver Presidential Service Award for volunteering a total of 253 hours at the Lisle Police Department in 2022.

"We do things from traffic control to trying to find lost children," Broda explained. "Calls come out if there's a house fire or an incident in the community, they need extra volunteers to do traffic control, so it's a whole variety."

He says the program gives him a better understanding of what police do day in and day out.

"I just try to encourage people in the community to be part of the solution and not part of the problem. By volunteering, you're part of the solution."

Broda hopes other residents will be a difference maker like him, by joining Volunteers 4 Lisle.
