(WBBM Newsradio) -- This winter was brutal enough that a piece of it is still on public display in Palatine, despite a burst of summer-like warmth earlier this week.
Some co-workers at a nearby business are betting on how much longer the holdover will last.
They've been holding the pool for 18 years at Advanced Auto and Truck Repair to guess when the pile of snow across the street on Colfax will disappear.
Co-owner Rod Knesper said the pile usually goes by late June or early July, but this is the biggest largest pile they've seen.
"It's pretty dirty. It becomes very hard," he told WBBM Newsradio on Wednesday. "It's actually more than a snow pile. It's more like big huge pile of ice."
The snow sits in the shade of a parking garage, where the village dumps it from the roof during the cold season.
The pool is a nice distraction and something to talk about, Knesper said. They closed it two weeks ago. The winner will get $100, and $500 will be donated for their favorite charity.
