ELGIN, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) --Summer is over for more than 35,000 students in Elgin District U-46, as the state’s second largest school district began classes this morning.
The new year is beginning with more than 160 new teachers fresh from orientation earlier this month. New Superintendent Suzanne Johnson told parents in a recorded message they have a lot to look forward to.
"This year is full of promise for us all," she said. "Our schools are buzzing with anticipation and I'm eager to witness the achievement of each and every one of our students."
The Elgin Courier News reported last week the district still has dozens of teaching positions to fill and is challenged by low unemployment. The district is also short about a dozen bus drivers, but has more than last year.
