CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The people who work for the village of south suburban Dixmoor are wondering whether they’re going to receive paychecks Friday.
Village trustees in Dixmoor are pinning the blame for the possible payless payday on Mayor Yvonne Davis. They put out a letter calling on Mayor Yvonne Davis to resign after she canceled the last regular board meeting and did not show up to a board meeting specially called to approve the paying of the village’s bills. In addition, the Village Board approved the hiring of a Financial Consultant to handle the village’s finances, but the Mayor has refused to execute the contract.
“The Mayor continues to thwart efforts for responsible governance at every turn,” Trustee Fitzgerald Roberts said. “Now, she is canceling meetings and creating even more problems. The Dixmoor Village Board is committed to honoring our financial commitments to our employees. We need to pay our employees now!”
Trustee Toni Mitchell said the village’s finances need to be investigated. There has not been an audit of the TIF funds since 2000 and the Mayor has never done an audit of the Village’s finances since taking office in 2017, she said.
“We need accountability,” Mitchell said. “No one really knows what has been happening with the Village’s finances. This is an insult to the taxpayers in this community. If we can’t get accountability from the mayor then perhaps we need to have the state intervene and conduct the long overdue audits.”
Meanwhile, Mayor Davis put out a letter to employees Wednesday. In it, she said that because she and the trustees had a disagreement about the hiring of a new village treasurer, payroll could not get processed and employees may not get paid Friday.
