CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The Democratic National Convention has come and gone. Now, the cleanup begins near the United Center.

The political speeches are now echoes in the concrete canyons, so is the chanting and shouting from the protests, largely peaceful but not always.

Chicago is being returned to Chicago.

Near the United Center, work started soon after the last of the delegates left. Barricades are coming down and restrictions are being lifted. Life is returning to normal.

Price of public safety is expected to be in the tens of millions.

Police Superintendent Larry Snelling said whatever it takes.

“The investment in keeping this city safe is absolutely necessary, so people can criticize what it takes, but nothing that you do is worth anything. It’s free,” Snelling said earlier in the week.

Snelling said what the police department has learned is that preparation is everything.

The work removing street barricades and fencing will continue through the weekend, around the United Center and McCormick Place.
