(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A new report shows that Illinois’ number of domestic violence-related deaths in 2023 more than doubled from 2022 levels.

The Illinois Coalition Against Domestic Violence's (ICADV) annual report found that there were 94 cases of domestic violence in 2023 — which resulted in 120 deaths.

In 2022, there were 45 incidents and 57 deaths reported.

Of 2023’s total deaths, 105 were caused by men. The ICADV report found that 61% of their victims were women. About half of those killed were intimate partners of the attackers.

Thirteen of the reported cases ended in suicide — all of them by men who took their own lives.

Despite the larger increase, though, domestic violence-related deaths among children decreased significantly from 2022 levels.
