(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- An Uptown doorman saved the day for a newlywed couple.

After a nice honeymoon, Mike Tish and his wife, Emilie, were excited to cook their first meal together at home Monday night.

Emilie took off her wedding set to keep them clean and set them next to the sink.

“We have a nice dinner. I do the dishes, take the trash out,” recalls Mike Tish, a digital content producer for WBBM Newsradio.

It wasn't until around 10 p.m. that the couple realized the rings were missing, and Mike immediately knew they had likely been tossed in the trash during cleanup. He had dropped that trash bag in the chute at his building.

The building's doorman was his only hope for help.

"I tell Leonte, 'I’ve got an insane request that might not even be possible,' and he’s like, 'Hit me, What you got?’ And I’m like, 'I might have thrown away my wife’s wedding rings.'"

Mike says Leonte didn't even let him finish. Instead, he rushed over to the trash room and hit the stop button on compactor so that Mike could see if his trash bag was still in there. Thankfully it was.

It took some time “sifting through coffee grounds, queso, pico de gallo,” the husband recalls.

Emilie found her rings in a produce bag. A very relieved Mike shared the news with their new hero, Leonte.

“His job isn't to help me make sure I can go into the trash chute and do that -- that’s going above and beyond,” he says.

Mike says they can't thank him enough.
