Dorm Drop-off: Advice for New College Parents

Northwestern University

For many parents of college students, the drop-offs are done and now they're left wondering how often to reach out.

A local author and college success expert encourages those navigating these first weeks to hold off on daily calls to make sure their child is up for class or tracking their location and grades.

Harlan Cohen tells WBBM personal wakeup calls are not helpful - and neither are constant calls or texts to address any anxiety parents might be feeling.

Instead, he encourages mom and dad to make sure their student has a support system on campus of a counselor, RA or friend.

Especially in case of a shooting or swatting incident.
