(WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Illinois State Police are investigating the death of a Knox County Sheriff’s deputy killed during a police chase on Friday morning.
“There’s no safety or justice without the law. There’s no law without law enforcement and brave souls like Deputy Nicholas Wiest," said State Police Director Brendan Kelly.
Kelly called the death of Weist "a tremendous loss" and said his agency is working with law enforcement partners to pursue maximum justice.
The 34-year-old Weist was setting up spike strips during a police chase that started in Galesburg when police say he was hit by Daylon Richardson. A judge denied bond for the 22-year-old Granite City man, who faces murder, unlawful possession of weapon by a felon and aggravated fleeing and eluding.
Weist joined the sheriff’s office four years ago.
