(CHICAGO WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Two men appeared in bond court Wednesday, one charged with reckless homicide, both accused of drag racing near Midway Airport last summer when a pedestrian was struck and killed.

Her name was Shawman Meireis, and she died the day before her 41st birthday. She was born on the East Coast, graduated summa cum laude from Boston University and was living in Florida. Last August she was visiting Chicago with her boyfriend.

Authorities said two cars, both Corvettes, were drag racing last August on Cicero Avenue near Midway.  And, Meireis was hit in a crosswalk.

27-year-old Aaron Guerrero is charged with two felonies: reckless homicide and aggravated street racing.

36-year-old Noe Garcia is charged with felony aggravated street racing.

Guerrero remained at the scene and was initially cited for obstructed front windshield and failure to exercise due care with a pedestrian in the roadway. But police at the time said the investigation was continuing.

Guerrero has been appearing in Traffic Court for those citations, according to his lawyer, who said he warned his client there was a possibility of severe felony charges.

Neither Guerrero or Garcia have any criminal record, but Guerrero does have three previous suspensions for speeding. Both men had valid licenses at the time of the incident.

“This doesn’t happen without both of these vehicles engaging each other,” Judge Susana Ortiz said in court Wednesday.

Ortiz ordered Guerrero held on $100,000 bond and Garcia on $30,000 bond.
