(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – A 52-year-old Michigan City, Indiana man was arrested during a traffic stop because he was in possession of fake urine that can used to beat drug tests, Valparaiso police say.
There were a number of problems when police pulled over Kevin Thompson last week for failure to signal a lane change, officials said: The plates didn’t match the vehicle; Thompson doesn’t have a valid license; he’s on probation for possession of a stolen car.
And there was the bottle of synthetic urine in his pocket, authorities say.
Thompson allegedly told the officer he just left drug rehab and was meeting a friend at a bar. He said someone in his rehab group gave him the urine because he failed his last drug screen after a relapse.
He also said he was told to heat up the synthetic urine with a hand-warmer before the next screening, police said.
The leader of a testing lab in Valparaiso tells the Times of Northwest Indiana that it’s illegal in Indiana to possess synthetic urine for the purpose of beating a drug test. But it’s readily available online and can be very effective.
Thompson was charged with possessing the fake urine, the Times reported.
