(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Police in Wisconsin say a man driving a car that has an autopilot feature was suspected of being asleep at the wheel this week.

Around 8 a.m. Sunday, Kenosha County Sheriff’s deputies were notified that a man appeared to be asleep as his northbound Tesla crossed the Illinois-Wisconsin line on I-94.

A deputy spotted the moving vehicle and pulled alongside, noting the driver’s head was down and appeared to be sleeping. The deputy turned on his lights and sirens, but did not get the driver’s attention for two miles. The Tesla was clocked at 82 mph, the sheriff’s office said in a news release.

The driver, a 38-year-old man from Palatine, denied he was asleep but said he was tired.

The vehicle he was in was a 2019 Telsa with autopilot capability, the sheriff’s office said.

“Tesla mandates that the operator keep their hands on the steering wheel at all times and always maintain control of the vehicle while utilizing the autopilot feature,” police said.

The driver was ticketed for inattentive driving, police said.
