MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Guards at the Indiana State Prison in Michigan City may have thought there was an escape attempt when a man drove through the main gate on Tuesday evening.

The pick-up truck plowed through the main gate of the old prison that dates back to 1860 at about 6:00 p.m. raising alarms that it could be some kind of diversion.

State police said that was not the case and that it was allegedly a drunk driver.

Police had received a 911 call minutes earlier about the driver of a silver Chevy Silverado driving erratically nearby and the truck matched the description.

The driver was not injured and a field sobriety test was conducted at the scene.

62-year-old Robert Merriman, of Winamac, Ind. was charged with drunk driving and criminal trespass- both misdemeanors, so its unlikely he’ll be returning to the scene of the crash for a longer stay.

State police said his blood alcohol content was almost twice the .08 threshold.
