U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin is decrying what he sees as Republican senators’ hypocrisy over filling Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s Supreme Court seat.
The Democratic whip points to statements Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell made four years ago about replacing Justice Antonin Scalia before a presidential election — and now.
“The hypocrisy behind this and it should be humiliating to all of the Republican senators who joined McConnell four years ago”, Durbin said at a press conference in Chicago Monday about the Census.
Durbin says he’s been touched by the reaction to Ginsburg’s death and calls the liberal justice an “amazing woman.”
Over the weekend, Republican Sen. Lamar Alexander said no one should be surprised that his party’s majority would vote on a nomination before an election, saying the Constitution gives senators the power to do it and the voters who elected them expect it.
