An Illinois Senator is leading the charge in a fight for increased internet safety against some major tech companies.

“Shame on big tech for continuing to put profits over our children’s safety.”

That’s Bridgette Norring, who lost her 19-year-old son in 2020 to a fentanyl overdose after a drug deal made on Snapchat.

“More than 80-percent of teens dying from deadly fentanyl pills connect with their dealers on social media, mainly Snapchat and Instagram.”

But Senator Dick Durbin says Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act of 1996 means Snapchat and other companies cannot be held liable for third-party users’ content…something he says needs to change.

“Big tech needs to be incentivized to protect kids online. If they don’t, they should be held civilly liable. Lets sunset Section 230 and get this job done for our kids, now.”

Durbin has partnered with Senator Lindsay Graham on a bill to eliminate Section 230 by 2028, a move Actor and Father Joseph Gordon-Levitt says he fully supports.

“It’s not going to solve everything, but it’s the right first step. I want to see this thing pass 100 to 0. There should be nobody voting to give more impunity to these tech companies.”
