(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin said that after the Highland Park shooting, it's clear that laws alone can't keep deadly weapons out of the hands of disturbed young people.
Parental responsibility, the senator said, also plays a role.
Durbin said he’s troubled by reports that the alleged Highland Park shooter's father cosigned his Firearm Owners ID card, which allowed Robert Crimo III to purchase the high-power rifle used in the killings.
Reportedly, the suspect had tried to commit suicide before and had threatened to kill his family.
Durbin said it makes no sense that his parents would help him buy guns. Parents, he added, have a responsibility to make sure they are looking out for such problems.
“That is just an invitation to disaster [and] to more victims,” Durbin said. ”The parents have a special responsibility when it comes to firearms, and particularly when it comes to assault rifles, for God’s sake. I think there’s gotta be some culpability and responsibility in this situation.”
So called red-flag laws at the state level are not enough, said Durbin, who recognized that there are limits and difficulties with such laws.
