CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Senator Dick Durbin is pushing for more local and federal support for migrants as they continue to arrive in Chicago.
City officials said they're expecting the number of migrants coming to Chicago to increase ahead of next year's Democratic National Convention.
Senator Dick Durbin said federal agencies need to step it up and provide more financial support for migrants.
"The federal government has sent in money to help pay for this, but not nearly enough," he stressed. "I continue to push for the administration to take a humane approach to this to make sure these people feel that they're being treated fairly and humanely."
Durbin also said Chicagoans need to be more understanding of migrants as some have voiced frustrations that the city is helping migrants instead of people who already live here.
"We have to be humane to everybody," he added.
"That doesn't mean we turn our backs on these people, who are the most vulnerable of all. We have to give them a helping hand as well."
