Our planet is our home — today, millions of people will celebrate its natural beauty during Earth Day. The annual holiday honors the achievements of the environmental movement and raises awareness of the need to protect Earth’s natural resources.

“Every day is a little bit like Earth Day for us,” said Megan Dunning, Manager of Adult Learning Programs at the Morton Arboretum.

Conservation is the central idea for Earth Day. The holiday was created in 1970, when Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson organized a national demonstration to raise awareness about environmental issues. The holiday is now celebrated around the world.

“Here at the arboretum, we’re champions of trees; we work to protect trees here and around the region,” said Dunning.

The Morton Arboretum celebrates Earth Day, April 22, and Arbor Day, April 26, all month long with special events and programs. From Forest Therapy Walks (April 22, 29) to the New Invaders Watch Training Program (April 30), there’s something for everyone to enjoy.
