(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Over a week since the 2024 Illinois primary, election workers are still counting the votes in the race to nominate the Democratic Cook County State’s Attorney candidate.

On Wednesday afternoon, 155 votes were counted and showed retired justice Eileen O’Neill Burke leading Clayton Harris III by 1,609 votes. That’s a slight increase from where her lead was on Tuesday night.

O’Neill Burke won 54% of the 155 votes that were counted.

In an announcement on Tuesday, the Chicago Board of Elections said there were over 50,000 outstanding vote-by-mail ballots that were either unreturned or unrejected. Officials don’t expect all of those ballots to be properly returned by the April 2 deadline.

Both candidates have asked their supporters to remain patient as every single vote is counted. Prior to the election, officials have said the process of counting each vote can take as long as two weeks.

The winner of the Democratic Cook County State’s Attorney primary will face Republican Bob Fioretti in November.
