(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — An emu is still at-large after it escaped Illinois State Police in Central Illinois on Tuesday afternoon.
State police were called to a location east of Urbana on Interstate 74 by drivers who were concerned the emu was going to get hit.
Video showed the large flightless bird being chased by police on the road and into a field.
It escaped in a wooded area.
Police called in experts from the University of Illinois to assist with no luck.
Incidents like this one aren't all that unusual. It happened at least twice in the summer and fall of 2022 in Central Illinois.
In one incident, a dozen emus got out of a pen and people were warned to stay away from them because they can be aggressive. The birds are often kept as pets.
