(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Twenty buses left the Family Christian Center Church in Munster, Ind., and took a nearly 3-mile trip into Illinois to see the future site of an Equestrian University in south suburban Lynwood.

“Out of this ground is going to rise an incredible — incredible — equestrian center that you’re going to be so proud of,” said Pastor Steve Munsey, who spoke to his congregation at the groundbreaking ceremony Sunday.

The megachurch has owned multiple acres off Glenwood Dyer Road for a dozen years and, after deciding to keep the church in Munster, Family Christian Center leadership opted to use the land to build a bigger space for their horses, which are occasionally used in special services.

The facility will also hold space for veterinarian training geared toward providing medical services to horses. The largest portion of the land, though, will be converted into a showcase arena for national and international horse competitions.

“Our goal: It will draw people from all over the world who are horse lovers,” said Lynwood Mayor Jada Curry.

Curry said the facility has already made a local impact, too.

Last week, she said, the school board for nearby Sandridge Elementary voted to be annexed into the village because of the services they expect to offer to students on the autism spectrum, which will also help veterans with PTSD.

Curry added that she’s already working on bringing more development there. The center is expected to open next summer.
