Daniel Biss has less than four months left as the mayor of Evanston.

The democrat who’s running for Congress announced he plans to resign Oct. 18 to clear the way for a special election in the spring.

Biss made the announcement Tuesday during what was his final State of the City address.

It came after the Illinois State Board of Elections published a calendar that has the primary Feb. 23 and if no candidate gets more than 50% of the vote, the top top will be in a runoff April 6.

Since winning the Democratic primary for the 9th Congressional District in March, Biss has been under pressure to leave with enough time for voters to choose his successor.

The election is dependent on the mayor’s office being vacant by Oct. 19, which is still two weeks before the general election that Biss is favored to win.
