(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The Evanston City Council has advanced an ordinance that would require that non-residents pay to park near the lakefront.
Evanston is looking to make up money that has been lost by allowing free beach access. The proposal from Thomas Suffredin (6th) would cost out-of-towners $3 an hour to park.
He said nobody's constituents would be affected. But Council Member Melissa Wynne (3rd) wasn't so sure.
"I respectfully disagree," she said. "What we know is that people will hunt for free parking."
In the end, Mayor Daniel Biss broke a 4-4 tie, and the parking-fee ordinance advances for a final vote.
The city council put off another proposal to allow food trucks on the lakefront.
