EVERGREEN PARK (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Last weekend’s flash mob mayhem at a carnival in Tinley Park has prompted the organizers of another southwest suburban carnival to call it off.
The pastor of Most Holy Redeemer Parish in Evergreen Park broke the news to parishioners in an email Wednesday. The parish’s 46th annual carnival, scheduled for June 15-18, is canceled for this year.
Father Jim Hyland said everyone had been “looking forward to another enjoyable and successful event,” but that fights that have happened recently in downtown Chicago and at carnivals in Lombard and Tinley Park have raised safety concerns.
Fr. Hyland said the decision to cancel the event was a difficult one, especially since the carnival is Most Holy Redeemer’s biggest fundraiser. Plans are being worked on for an alternative event.
