(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A man who worked as a special education aide in the north suburbs is sentenced to 24 years in prison for sexually assaulting a student.

Lake County State's Attorney Eric Rinehart says Israel Suaste-Gonzalez, who lived near Mundelein, worked for the Special Education District of Lake County.

Rinehart said the assaults happened from 2016 until 2018.

Even though the victim was in a program for young adults to transition to independent living, her family says she had the mental capacity of a child between six and nine years old.

Rinehart says in exchange for guilty pleas on two counts of sexual assault, the sentence was reduced from the maximum of 30 years.
