CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A new art exhibit at the Chicago Cultural Center showcases works created by artists with mental health and substance use conditions.A new art exhibit at the Chicago Cultural Center showcases works created by artists with mental health and substance use conditions as part of their therapy.
The pieces on display were created through art therapy programs offered by Thresholds, an organization serving thousands of individuals in Illinois who are working to address their conditions. The exhibit aims to address the stigma that surrounds mental health, recognizing these individuals as artists first.
Artists First:25 Years of Studio Art at Thresholds is an exhibition of joy, insight, and reality says Thresholds CEO Mark Ishaug.
"These are talented men and women who are also living with a serious mental illness and maybe a co-occurring drug challenge."
Artists First is free and the artwork will be on display at the Chicago Cultural Center through early January.
While visiting the exhibit, a woman named Jennifer shared her first impression of the artwork with WBBM.
"I am fascinated by...some of these have such great detail," she said. "You feel there' s so much insight into their mind just by looking at it."
