(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Authorities in far northwest suburban Woodstock say they believe no civilians were injured Monday afternoon in the natural gas explosion that leveled one home and significantly damaged another.
A home on Lincoln Avenue was leveled in the blast, which occurred around 2:30 p.m., after a gas leak had been reported two hours earlier. NICOR and city crews responded to the report and had closed off traffic to the area.
A house next to the destroyed home sustained fire damage, but officials say there are no reports of any civilians injured. The gas leak has been contained, officials said.
“I have so much respect for the quick response, professionalism and bravery of the Woodstock Fire/Rescue Crews and Woodstock Police Department. This horrible tragedy shook the downtown community today and thankfully we have not been made aware of any casualties or injuries at this time,” Mayor Mike Turner said in a news release issued Monday evening.
The Red Cross is helping displaced residents, and School District 200 is offering social worker resources to anyone affected by the explosion. Anyone who needs resources is encouraged to call the city manager’s office at (815) 338-4301.
