Immigration authorities are being urged to release a man from custody with deep ties to Chicago.
Sergio Serna Ramirez was detained by U.S. Customs and Border Patrol in May after he took a wrong turn on a work trip and ended up on a bridge to Canada.
Ramirez owns a construction business and has lived in the Chicago area for 20-years.
He has had a U Visa application pending for seven years, has a work permit and Social Security number and is eligible for permanent residency through his wife, Kristina, who is a U.S. citizen.
Joined by community and elected officials at Lincoln United Methodist Church in Pilsen, Kristina Ramirez called on ICE to release her husband, citing his lack of criminal history and deep ties to the community.
"They're treating us as if we're murderers the way they have him there," says Kristina. "My husband is not a criminal. My husband is a very loving and good person."
The family is asking for Ramirez to be released on humanitarian parole.
He awaits a final court hearing next week that could end in an order of removal.
