Family of 5 found shot to death in Indiana identified

(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A family of five has been identified following an apparent murder-suicide in Northwest Indiana.

It happened at a mobile home park in Lake Station on Friday afternoon.

The Lake County coroner's office says 27-year-old Briana Payne and her three daughters, 4-year-old Alayna, 6-year-old Ava, and 7-year-old Aurorah, were found shot to death. Their deaths were ruled homicide.

Robert Payne, 31, the girl's father, was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

“I knew there was something weird because the cars weren't moved. And they go every day,” Neighbor Sandy Goodman told CBS News Chicago. “When they went in and came back out, I'm like, oh my gosh, something really bad happened.”

The shooting remains under investigation.

The two oldest daughters attended Virgil Bailey Elementary School. The school says it will have grief counselors on hand on Monday.
