(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – A crime-fighting canine in the northern suburbs has been sidelined after being injured over the weekend, officials say.
Dax, a German Shepherd that has been with the Lake County Sheriff’s Office for a decade, has enjoyed media coverage about his efforts to help capture suspects or find lost people.
This story is not so upbeat. Late Sunday night, Dax helped track down and capture an offender who ran off after crashing a stolen vehicle in unincorporated Zion. Dax and his handler were assisting Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin police.
“At some point during that apprehension, [Dax] let out a yelp and was injured while performing his duties,” Chris Covelli, Lake County deputy chief, told WBBM Newsradio on Tuesday.
Dax’s injuries are considered significant, with the dog unable to bear weight on his hind legs, Covelli said. The K9 is under the care of a veterinarian.
“We are all hoping for the best and quick recovery for him,” Covelli said.
