CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Cubs fans who made the trek to Wrigley Field for the home opener on Thursday said it was like a family reunion.

The ballpark was open to a capped number of fans for the first time since September 22, 2019, the last pre-pandemic home game.

Fans took pictures under Wrigley’s famous marquee. People sipped on ice cold beers at freezing outdoor patios at nearby bars. Vendors set up their T-shirt stands across the street from the park.

Vendor John Berkshire is happy to be back.

"It was very hurtful. I had a big loss of income," Berkshire said.

Yvette Rolon of Chicago has been to 26 home openers, and she wasn't going to miss this one. But she said she came prepared for the weather.

"I have two layers: two pants, two socks, thermals, sweater. You name it, I got it. I have my blanket, my hat, and my gloves," Rolon said.

"It feels like home. It's like home," she added.

Alyssa Schubert of Marengo said she had tears in her eyes as she approached the ballpark.

"The Cubs are a community. They're our heart and soul around here."
