CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Since the late 1990s, Chicago’s Local Initiative Support Corporation (LISC) has developed Quality-of-Life Plans which are visions for a community’s future that serve as a guide for investments and actions.
This year LISC is focusing on the city’s Far South Side by partnering with the Far South Chicago Coalition.
“This Quality-of-Life Plan couldn't have come at a better time,” LISC program officer Lauren Lewis told WBBM Newsradio.
The COVID-19 pandemic created new needs and emphasized existing ones for roughly 14 neighborhoods south of 95th Street like mental health care, youth outreach and new economic opportunities.
“We've been waiting on the Red Line extension, so hopefully the infrastructure bill will support that project,” said Lewis. “The 95th street corridor study will hopefully bring us some economic development there and they've been crying for a hotel for years.”
Above all, Lewis said their top priority is sharing the pride of the Far South Side through positive images of the community; something she refers to as a “beautiful space with beautiful people.”
A fundraiser luncheon will take place Saturday afternoon at Harborside International Golf Center to help kick off the organization’s Quality-of-Life Plan.
