DOLTON, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The FBI showed up at the Dolton Village Hall Friday afternoon serving subpoenas.
This follows months of turmoil in Dolton, where trustees and Mayor Tiffany Henyard have long been at odds and she's been accused of financial wrongdoing and political retaliation.
Trustees have demanded an investigation. CBS 2 spoke to trustees Brittney Norwood and Tammy Brown outside after four FBI agents showed up.
"I felt a sigh of relief," said Norwood. Brown said that she's "overjoyed that finally, someone has heard our cry."
This comes after a top aide to the mayor was indicted on federal bankruptcy fraud charges.
Prosecutors said Keith Douglas Freeman, 45 lied several times when he filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in an attempt to hide how much money he made from his work as the village administrator for Dolton, the municipality manager for Thornton Township and from his private consulting business.
Earlier this month, the trustees hired former Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot to investigate Henyard. Lightfoot said she urged for "the full cooperation of Mayor Henyard, her staff, all village trustees."
The FBI only said the agents were at the village hall for "court-authorized, investigative activity," according to CBS 2.
