(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Illinois is getting an infusion of $126 million to fight homelessness across the state.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development is sending out $2.5 billion in grants nationwide to support thousands of local homeless assistance programs.

James Cunningham, HUD's midwest regional deputy director, said the state of Illinois is getting $126 million in "Continuum of Care Money" to help fund homeless assistance programs run by cities, state and local governments and social service agencies.

The Chicago area gets the bulk of the money — $78 million. Cook County gets $14 million, while the Collar Counties and greater Rockford area are also getting renewed help.

Cunningham on Monday said the coronavirus pandemic has made the need even more urgent.
