(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A 29-year-old convicted felon has been sentenced to six years in federal prison for being caught with a semiautomatic handgun more than two years ago, prosecutors said.
Deandre Morrison, 29, of Chicago, pleaded guilty last year to a federal charge of illegal firearm possession. Prosecutors say he previously had been convicted of multiple felonies in state court, including a robbery, and was prohibited by federal law from possessing a firearm.
Chicago police pulled Morrison over for a suspected traffic violation in the South Shore neighborhood in November 2019. Officers allegedly found a gun wedged between the driver's seat and center console.
The firearm had previously been reported stolen in Indiana, authorities said.
U.S. District Judge Martha M. Pacold last week handed down the six-year sentence for Morrison.
"The illegal possession of firearms by felons is a very serious offense that threatens the safety of the public," one prosecutor argued in the government's sentencing memorandum. "Felons who carry loaded firearms will face real consequences — and real punishment — including meaningful time in prison."
