(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Firefighters in northwest suburban Long Grove came to the rescue of a baby deer, which was trapped after falling into a deep basement window well.
The fawn fell into the window well Monday morning at a home on Woodland Lane near Long Grove Road. Animal control officials could not be reached, so firefighters were sent to help.
Andy Wienckowski, Long Grove's deputy fire chief, said the 6-week-old animal was not injured. Firefighters put a blanket over the fawn’s eyes so that it would remain calm, he said.
Then they delicately lifted it out of the window well, which was about 4 or 5 feet deep, by using a ladder.
The firefighters took the baby deer to a safe place, and the fawn quickly ran off.
Firefighters would like to think the mother deer was somewhere nearby, Wienckowski said.
