WHEATON, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Charges were filed against a man for allegedly fatally shooting another man outside a west suburban bar Friday morning.
Michael Freund, 49 faces First Degree Murder charges in the shooting death of Dexter Perkins, the DuPage County State Attorney's announced Saturday.
The shooting happened around 8:41 a.m. outside Rosie O’Neill’s Irish Pub and Grub located at 0N131 Gary Ave. in Wheaton.
There was an alleged argument over pizza and the bar tab between Freund, Perkins, and two other men, according to the DuPage County State Attorney's office.
After a brief scuffle on the outside front porch of the bar between Perkins and one of the other men, Freund proceeded to out a 9 mm Glock handgun from his jacket pocket and fired two warning shots into the air.
It is further alleged that after Freund fired the warning shots, Perkins approached the other man at which time Freund, who was standing on the other side of a wooden railing, fired at him, striking him in the torso and in the face.
Investigators found that Perkins did not know Freund or any of the other men involved in the incident. Perkins was reportedly a father of two children with a third on the way.
“It’s horrible to see this type of violence occur during the holiday season,” DuPage County Sheriff James Mendrick said in a statement. “I want to commend the deputies and State’s Attorney Bob Berlin and his staff for their work to ensure that this person will be brought to justice for this crime."
Pre-Trial release was denied for Freund after he made his first court appearance Saturday morning. His next court appearance is scheduled for January 18, 2024 for arraignment.
