
(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Three small children were among five people killed Monday when a school bus collided with a semi-truck in west central Illinois, state police said.
The school bus with three children was traveling on Route 24 when it crossed the center line and struck an oncoming semi-truck around 11:30 a.m., Illinois State Police said in a news release. Both drivers and the children were killed, officials said.
The victims were identified as: Maria Miller, 5; Andrew Miller, 3; and 3-year-old Noah Driscoll, all from Rushville; and David Coufal, 72, of Browning, Illinois; and Angela Spiker, 57, of Rushville.
The crash happened near Rushville, a community of about 3,000 about 60 miles (96.56 kilometers) west of Springfield.
“There’s not really words at this time that can be said,” Schuyler County Sheriff Bill Redshaw said at a news conference. “When you have a loss of life like this, it’s devastating.”
An investigation continues.
