FLOSSMOOR (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The police chief in south suburban Flossmoor is out of a job, and the village’s mayor is explaining why.

There had been talk in Flossmoor that Police Chief Jerel Jones’ job was on the line, and some people came out in support of him at this week’s village board meeting.

Mayor Michelle Nelson has issued a statement saying the chief was fired over his performance. The mayor said that when any employee has performance issues they’re communicated with to try to turn things around.

Mayor Nelson said village officials communicated their concerns to Chief Jones on several occasions and that there continued to be serious operational and administrative lapses under his watch.

Jones did not talk about the matter when asked on Monday.

Deputy Chief Keith Taylor remains on the job.
