(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Residents of Palatine will no longer have to buy village stickers for their windshields.

Instead of going on sale today, the suburb is eliminating the annual $30 fee for drivers. Once the current stickers expire at the end of next month, Palatine drivers won't have to buy or display new ones.

The village says after a review of its finances, the council agreed to discontinue them. Mayor Jim Schwantz says they feel — even in the face of a possible recession — they're in a good position to go forward without them, thanks to economic development and sales taxes.

The stickers generated about $1.2 million a year in revenue and cost about $200,000 to administer, including offering discounts to senior citizens, disabled veterans and the handicapped.
